A Monday Morning Status Report

Status Report – Monday May 22, 2017

We have been lost in space and stranded on this planet for many years now… tired of that weasel Dr Smith and danger Wiill Robinson…. oops wrong status report.

Star Date 2017…..nope that doesn’t work either….

Donald Trump is still President! Arghhh! Danger USA!

My Morning Workout

Yesterday’a morning workout was a full 60 minute workout that burned 517 calories. Today’s workout was an abbreviated version of the same workout. It lasted 41 minutes, during which time I burned 309 calories . My average heart rate was 103 beats per minute and 69% of the time my heart rate was in the fat burn zone. All in all it was a good workout.

Today’s Adventures in Babysitting

When I arrived at my son’s house this morning, my daughter in law told me that my granddaughter was sick. She said she had a fever and to give her 5 ml of Tylenol after she finished her breakfast. She also said to tell her is was candy.

Usually my granddaughter is pretty good about taking medicine, but this morning she wanted no parts of it. The second time I offered her “the candy” she ran away to her playroom. When I came into the room she told me to leave so she could poop. (Yes someone is ready to be potty trained but wants no part of it.)

After watching TV for a while I tried to give her the candy again, which resulted in crying . My wife told me to ask her daddy what to do. I texted my son and he replied to tell her it’s candy juice. THis is how she responded when I tried that trick.

I don’t think she bought it. Do you?

What’s up for this afternoon?

Hopefully my granddaughter will nap this afternoon so I can get a little farther in my current read C J Box’s latest Joe Pickett adventure Vicious Circle. It is the 17th book in this excellent series.

The storyline features the return of Dallas Cates to Saddlestring and he is out to make Joe pay for what happened to Cates and his family. That story can be found in Endangered book 15 in the series. My suggestion is that you read it before reading Vicious Circle. I actually wish that It hasn’t been two years since I read Endangered.

Vicious Circle is book number 24 for 2017. I need to finish it quickly because I need to read another book before the end of the month to stay on pace to reach my goal of reading 60 books this year!

Just checked the Nest cam and my granddaughter appears to be sleeping. So it’s time to make some lunch and make my way back into the world of Joe Pickett!

The Ever-evolving Morning Workout

The Morning Workout Evolution Begins!

One thing that has evolved over the last two weeks is my morning workout. When I decided to get in shape back in January my morning routine consisted of six minutes of Kundalini yoga, followed by six minutes of light weights and six minutes of resistance bands.

Evolution Number One – Dance

Then I added some movement. A few minutes of dance cardio. My weight started to drop and I started to loose inches. Soon my routine consisted of 12-14 minutes of dance cardio, followed by six minutes of light weights and kettle bell, six minutes of two types of resistance bands and four minutes using resistance boxing  bands. The entire workout took about thirty minutes. I was.burning close to three hundred calories doing this routine.

Evolution Number 2 – Stabilty Ball and More Dance

Over the last few week I added more to the routine. First came a series of exercises using the stability  ball. Then I added more dance-cardio. This increased the overall time of the workout to 40 minutes  burning around 400 calories.

Calisthenics are added

Finally over the last few days I added more to the last portion of the workout. During the dance cardio I have been doing jumping jacks, squats, burpees, and other other day I added push ups and sit-ups. Considering anytime I used to do squats of any kind I hurt for days after, the fact that I can do a couple reps of 12 and feel no pain is an improvement!

My last workout on Saturday morning was 54 minutes and resulted in burning 462 calories.  Ok 60 minutes and 500 calories here I come.

Now over these last two weeks my weight has dropped to 170 and held steady there without running. My last run was two Sundays ago. I have had some pain in my right foot which seems to be better. I think I will give it this week to see if it goes away completely.

So while I stilll have a long way to go to be in the shape I want to be in I have made remarkable progress, in my humble opinion, since the start of the year! But I better watch out because it seems that I am moving towards an exercise addiction. But I guess there are worse things to be addicted to, eh?

More Changes to Come?

The one thing that has suffered is my meditation and yoga. Back in January Kundalini yoga was part of the routine. Prior to that my morning workout was mostly yoga. Plus whatever routine I did was followed by a 10 to 15 minute meditation.

What I may do is do yoga in the morning on the two  days I work and on the other days try to do an evening yoga routine. I will follow each with a short meditation. That seems like a plan!  So wish me luck!

A Tiring Day with Zoe?

Uh, I Think the Run was a wee more tiring than Zoe!

Ok so today was not a work at Target day. It was a babysit Zoe day, which is a little more fun. Watching Zoe is a cake job. I really don’t think you can say that about most 2 1/2 year-olds! When I arrived at 9:30, Zoe had just gotten up. She was watching TV and eating her breakfast. So I look at some stuff on my Kindle for a little while. After finishing her breakfast, she grabbed my hand and said it was time to play doll house. All that really meant was I had to sit by the doll house while she played. She basically played with the doll house for the next hour until it was time to pick up my wife for lunch. We came over to our house. Zoe played nicely with a finger-stamping set. She also had some yogurt.

No Nap for Zoe means No Nap for Granddad!

At 12 o’clock we took my wife back to work and headed back to Zoe’s house. She finished her uncrustable while watching Paw Patrol. I kept telling her it was going to be her nap time soon. A little before 1 o’clock she said she was ready for her nap. We went into her room she got her binkie and I put her in her crib and closed the door, Typically, when I watch her I watch her through the nest cam and when I initially turned it on today she seemed to be laying down.

The next time I looked I was looking not at Zoe but the curtains and Zoe was talking wildly! Hmm, wonder how the camera got moved!  Anyway each time I checked for the next twenty minutes or so Zoe was talking a blue streak!! Finally things got really frantic and I went in her room. She popped up took her binkie out and said “I’m done my nap, done sleeping” I responded that she had not in fact – done any sleeping!!  oh well!

Zoe at the Library

Zoe on a prior visit to the library

Off to the Library

Since I had a book to pick up at the library, I decided that we would go to the library to kill some time until my wife was done work at 3:30. We had fun, Zoe played with some of the toys. Back in the summer the library had a ball toss set up in the children’s library. So today after playing on one side of the library, Zoe took off to the other. As I followed I could hear her questioning – where the balls were!!

Zoe at the library

Again , Zoe on a prior visit to the library!

Anyway, we made a quick stop ar Dollar General on the way home to pick up some hot dog rolls and then it was off to pick-up my wife. Because there were now a lot of people around to watch Zoe, i.e my wife, daughter Elizabeth and son Nicholas, I was now free to run. So off I went on a four-mile run……..

Now the reason that I have written all of this is that I always have good intentions to write about my run and the music I listened to after the run. But invariably, by the time I finish showering, taking Zoe home.making and eating dinner, watching Jeopardy, cleaning up from dinner, starting a load of laundry, my brain is fried! And now it;s time to get ready to go to bed. so I can go to Target in the AM!

Anyway, it was a good run and I listened to some really good acoustic blues. I will try to write about that tomorrow!! Static in the Wires from Martin Harley and Daniel Kimbro (Daniel plays bass!) was album that was the soundtrack for the run. Here is a video of them performing together. Enjoy! I know I did!

A Slightly Different Morning Workout…..

….With Some Great Music from Terra Guitarra and Joseph L. Young

The Morning Workout

So every non-Target working I try to do a workout that includes a tuning in warm up (Long Ek Ong Kar) followed by a 7:30 minute Kundalini and regular exercise set that includes

Lower spine flex
twists
side bends
shoulder shrugs
head rolls
alternating knee to chest
alternating leg raises
double leg lifts with a 5 lb exercise ball
arm lifts – on back legs at 90 to floor and extend up arms with the 5 lb ball (lifting head also)
bicycle
pick me up (butt raises)
expand and contract legs with legs on 45 degree angle

Each exercise is done to a recitation of the Mool Mantra (about 25 seconds)

That is followed by 7 minutes of light weights – a series of exercise with  2 – 15 lb weights, 2 5 lb weights and a 20 lb Kettle bell. The last 6 minute exercise set uses a resistance band, followed by a slightly aerobic set using a boxing type band and then another x-type resistance ban. The set ends with a 15 minute meditation. Total time is 40 or so minutes. So I typically have been starting my Fitbit tracker at the start of the routine and turn it off at the end. I end up with about 12 minutes of productive exercise and the rest well like resting (i.e the warm-up and the meditation.

This morning I started my routine with some rhythmic movement to get me moving and followed it with my regular routine. I stopped the Fitbit before the meditation. So I ended up with a 26 minute workout with 18 productive minutes. 17 minutes in the fat burn zone and 1 in the cardio zone. It was a good workout! I still did my 15-minute meditation but I just didn’t track it as exercise!

The Soundtracks: Terra Guitarra and Joseph L. Young

There was another twist to my exercise this morning. Typically, I use one album as the soundtrack for the entire workout. However, this morning I used two albums. Of Sea & Stars from Terra Guitarra was the album for the exercise portion of the routine, The soundtrack for my meditation was Etherium from flutist Joseph L Young. Both did their job splendidly! Of Sea & Stars kept my pace up during the exercising. While Etherium  relaxed me during my meditation!

While I have listened to both of these albums several times, I think I need to explore more about both the players and the albums a little more before I write about them.

Terra Guitarra is an acoustic guitar duo composed of lead guitarist and composer Bruce Heckel and Julie Patchouli. Patchouli plays mainly rhythm guitar as a foundational base to Heckel’s blazing solo’s. On Of Sea& Stars she also plays drums and bass. Ok so  have listened to this album several times and have heard their music previously. However, I have never seen then perform live or on YouTube The following video is the first time I have seen them and my first reaction to seeing Heckel’s playing was Wow!! I have another favorite!!!

So check them out! I on the other hand are going to go exploring and listening to find out more about this fantastic duo!! I’ll let you know what I find out!!

If you’d care to Explore you can start at here at Terra Guitarra’s website!

Anti-Aging Efforts Update – February 14,2017

Ok so once again I need to apologize for not writing on this blog for a while….. (Short Break)

Ok  I’m back I just had to figure out how to download an ebook from my library. I haven’t done it for a while and I needed to reinstall the Overdrive app on my iPhone to do it! Anyway I did it and just now downloaded the book! Now the question becomes do I want to read The Perfect Assassin, book one in the David Slator series from Ward Larsen first, or continue Assassin’s Silence book three in the series, that I checked out of the library yesterday!! Can you say too many books to little time!! oh, well, I think book one has to come first!!

Now back to my original comment about my lack of writing on this blog. When I did write a post a few weeks ago I wrote that won of the reasons that I had not posted anything was that I felt guilty because of my lack of effort in attempting to slow down  my biologic clock! Well it appears that my efforts to do do over the first few weeks of 2017 may have erased that guilt!!

This Year’s Check-Up

Last week I went to my belated 2016 yearly physical and had blood work done and an EKG. My fear was that my cholesterol level would have climbed over 200! In 2015 it had reached its highest level at 196. So that is why I started eating a little better no late night cakes or cookies an d a few more fruits and veggies. It is also why I started exercising a little differently in the mornings by going back to my old routine that included Kundalini yoga, light weights and resistance bands. The exercising and dieting has also has made it easier to start running again.

The bottom line is that my total cholesterol level dropped to 176. That is the lowest its been since 2013!  My triglycerides level also dropped 14 points from 106 to 91, The only negative was that my LDL Cholesterol level. It was still high, but the good news is that it dropped 15 points from a high of 125 to 110. The target level is 100, so I am not that far above the normal level. So I need to look for those foods that lower your LDL levels!

My EKG and blood pressure were both ok, so my doctor even suggested that I may not need to go back to the cardiologist! However, I think I will still make an appointment with him!

Running

So far in February I have run four times. The last two runs have been over a 3.25 mile course. They have both been slow steady runs with a pace between 11:20 and 11:30 min/mile. Today I will be hitting the road a little after noon and I will tell you about it later today! Maybe I’ll try for 4 miles!!

To keep me going I started to look for 5Ks scheduled near the end of April. The one that I think that I may shoot for is  the Collingswood HS Athletic Hall of Fame 5k. It’s scheduled for Saturday April 22nd. And since it’s in Colingswood maybe I can even get my wife to go with me!!

A New Year – Back to the Basics and Running!

Renaissance Granddad Returns to an Old Workout and Starts Running Again!!

Ok so I haven’t written anything here in a very long time! One of the reasons is that I switched and started posting more at my original website Me, Myself, Music and Mysteries, and most recently I decided that I was going to focus more on the books that I read, so I started a new website This Man Reads. The second reason is last year I sucked at turning my biological clock backwards. In actuality, I think the clocks moved faster last year! Anyway, I have vowed to do better this year.  So far that is happening and hence this post!!

Actually, the move to getting in shape and slowing down that speeding biologic clock started at the end of 2016!  For several years I did a simple 15-minute workout before work. The workout consisted of a 5-minute warm-up and tuning in using the Ek Ong Kar mantra. followed by 5 minutes of Kundalini exercises and then 5 minutes of light weights and resistance bands. Last year I stopped doing that workout and started doing more yoga in the morning. Additionally, for years I ran three days a week. Typically, I ran four miles to days a week and a longer run between 5-8 miles on the weekend. For a variety of reasons in 2016 I hardly ran at all.

Renaissance Granddad Postpones Yearly Doctor Visits!

When December rolled around and I was faced with my yearly physical and my visit to my cardiologist, I put them both off. until after the holidays. It’s not that I am in bad shape, just not the shape I am normally in. My weight is about 5-6 pounds over my  typical weight and 12 pounds over my running weight. Additionally, I have not been eating all that well!

So near the end of December I decided to go back to the old routine on a daily basis. On days that I work at Target I do the routine in segments of  3, 6, and 6 minutes. On the non-Target days I do the routine as follows 3  minute meditation, 6 minutes Kundalini, 6 minutes light weights ( 5 and 15 lbs) and a kettle bell and 6 minutes using a variety of bands. The result has been that while I have not lost weight I have lost some inches, I think!

A Return to An Old Workout Leads to a Return to Running – Hopefully!!

Anyway, I feel better and this has led me to the streets!! Yes this week I have run twice, so far! I hope to make it three days with a run tomorrow. And while I have not run far, both runs were 2.1 miles, my overall pace  was not bad the first day was 11:22 and the second 11:15 min/mile. Both times were better than I ran back in August and October!

And Doctor Appointments!

I also made an appointment with my doctor for my yearly EKG and blood work in two weeks and will make an appointment with the cardiologist  for a week or so after that, so I can take all the results to the appointment!

So the plan is to watch what I eat and see if the added running can help me lose a few pounds within  the next two weeks. So that I go to both appointments feeling good about myself! And maybe I can start moving  my biologic clock in the reverse direction!!

Wish Me Luck!! Don’t worry you’ll hear about the running!

New Morning Exercises & Hank Crawford’s Bday!

Edward aka (Renaissance Granddad) – Day 23823 (Dec 21, 2016)

Woo! Hoo! Today is the Winter Solstice!! That of course means, today is either the shortest day of the year or the longest night! I prefer to look at it as the shortest day and from here until the Summer Solstice the days keep getting longer!! I used to hate it when it was dark when I went to work in the morning and again when I came home in the evening.

For years i ran at 5:30 after work. I always hated it when daylight savings time ended and it would get dark before 5! I particularly hated it the night I sprained an ankle coming off of a sidewalk and not seeing the two by fours that someone had put along the curb so they could jump the curb! From that night on I have been leary of running at night!

Now that I work in the mornings and could run in the afternoon before it gets dark, I am not running at all! That has got to change soon!! The only  thing I due hate now with these short days is getting up and ready for work in the dark! Come On Spring!!

Morning Exercises and Meditation

For the last week or so I have changed up my morning exercises. For most of 2016 I have done various yoga routines in the morning. On the days that I don’t work I had been sporadically doing a routine that includes: Kundalini yoga, weights and bands. I used to do that set of exercises each morning when I worked at Lippincott. When I did it on those mornings. I did 5 minutes Kundalini meditation called “Long Ek Ong Kars” followed by 5 minutes of various Kundalini exercises and a few typical exercises – leg raises, bicycle, etc. The last five minutes was composed of weights and bands exercises.

By doing that routine regularly, I always was able to maintain my weight at the same level even through periods when I didn’t run. Then came retirement and babysitting. Over the last two years, I have run less, but thanks to Oliver I had long walks two or three days a week. Well, back in June that ended, when Oliver went into full time day care. The result, I gained weight not a massive amount but enough to bother me.

While I have not gone on a strict diet I have cut down and have not really lost any weight. So the other day I thought maybe I will try to do the old routine on a daily basis again. I modified the routine so that it looks like this now 3:00 minutes “Long Ek Ong Kars”, 7 minutes Kundalini  and other exercises, and finally and 9 minutes of Weights and Bands. The whole routine ends with a 10 minute meditation.

Like I said earlier I started this about a week ago and since then I have felt a lot better, more energetic, etc. I actually feel like I could start running again!! Damn you cold weather! Anyway I think may have lost a little weight (my scales gave me two different weights this morning) but I do feel like I may have lost some inches! Overall, we’ll see where it takes me! Wish Me Luck!

The Soundtrack: Joseph L Young – Ethereum

Joseph L Young is a world-flute master and keyboardist. Ethereum is his fourth album. His music brings together global music traditions that mix primal earthiness with modern synthesized sounds. His primary instruments are a wide variety of ethnic flutes from around the world. I will write more about the album soon!!

Jazz Birthday of Interest (at least to me): Hank Crawford

You can check out a complete list of Jazz Birthday on this day here

Hank Crawford – (December 21, 1934 – January 29, 2009) From the Artist Biography by Thom Jurek at AllMusic…..

Hank Crawford

With an unmistakable blues wail, full of emotion and poignancy, altoist Hank Crawford bridges the gap between that tradition and that of jazz more completely than any other living horn player. Born in Memphis, Crawford was steeped in the blues tradition from an early age. He began playing piano but switched to alto when his father brought one home from the army. He claims his early influences as Louis Jordan, Earl Bostic, and Johnny Hodges Read More

Wildflower is the only Hank Crawford album in my music library and it’s a good one! Again from AllMusic

….This record is so hot the only soul-jazz it can be compared to in both its contemporary form and funky feel are Grover Washington’s Feels So Good and Mister Magic issues. In other words, Crawford’s Wildflower is indispensable as a shining example of ’70s groove jazz at its best. Read the Full Review

Today when I was reading about Hank Crawford I also checked out his vast discography! I decided that I would listen to his 1987 release After Dark. After Dark is an editor’s pick at AllMusic. You can check it out here at Spotify

About This Post

This is the first of a new kind of post.  I hope to continue the idea is to give you a glimpse of my ADD Days on one or two pages! The page may cover my exercise for the day, the music I’m listening to and the book I am reading. Maybe I should say plan to read! Sometimes I plan to read more than I can get through!!

Oh ED K Day at the top of the post is the number of days I have been alive!!

The Hunt for DNA Connections Goes On!

Through DNA the Hunt for Genealogical Connections Goes On!!

So over the last several weeks I have spent more time at Ancestry.com, trying to unravel the tangled roots of my various family lines, than either reading or listening to music. That doesn’t mean that I haven’t been reading or listening at all, just that my focus has been on searching for dead people. One of the most interesting finds was a great-aunt Alice Matilda Ashton.

My great-grandfather John Sherrington Ashton III was born in 1858. The son of John Sherrington Ashton and Mary Parezo. John married Mary E Warwick in 1881. As far as I knew they had five children: Mary Catherine, Edward, William L., Horace, and Blanche. Of those children, my mother only knew one, William, who was to her Uncle Bill, who lived in Pennsylvania. From my genealogical searching I knew of Horace,Edward and Blanche. Edward and Blanche both died as teenagers. Horace was only one when he died. Recently, I discovered through DNA and Ancestry that Mary Catherine married an Emil Gottlieb and lived in Philadelphia. She even had a child named John Sherrington Gottlieb!!

Discovering the DNA Connection

Anyway, several weeks ago a high DNA match came up with a Jim Smith from New York. He was listed as a 3rd cousin and is one of my highest matches. When we (my wife and I) looked at his tree, we saw an Alice Ashton. After seeing that Alice was born in 1890 our thoughts immediately turned to Alice being a child of John and Mary.My wife quickly went to Family Search there she discovered a birth record for a female Ashton child of John and Mary born in March of 1890. No name was listed, but when we went back to the census we saw that the month and year of birth of the unnamed girl matched Alice’s.  (Alice’s mother Mary died in 1892 and John remarried.Margaret McCloskey, who was a grandfather’s mother.)

In the 1900 census,  Alice was living with a Danse family in Monroe Township in Middlesex County, NJ and her relationship to the head of the house was a servant!. Monroe Township is about 40 miles northeast of Beverly where Alice was born. A servant at nine years old! How sad!  Alice eventually married Sidney A Smith in New York in 1913. He was the grandfather of the Jim Smith who is my DNA match.

After we unraveled the mystery of the DNA connection I emailed Jim and welcomed him as a new cousin. Jim was thrilled to discover his Ashton roots since Alice was one of his brick walls. So through DNA Jim discovered more about a grandmother he didn’t know anything about and I discovered a great-aunt that I didn’t know anything about!!

Since then we have spent many hours trying to find connections to high DNA matches in my McCloskey line and also a connection to the Lehman family. So far we have had no luck in establishing either of those connections.I fear that both connections are back in Ireland!!

What Else has been Happening!

Over these last few weeks, I have also been reading. Today I finished Red Cell by Mark Henshaw. Yeah Me!. I will try to write about it tomorrow! I am also about halfway through 2 or 3 other books, that I can hopefully finish over the next week or so!!

A Foundation Course in German Starts Me on My Way!

Don’t Know Much about the German I Took – But I’m trying anew!!

So if you have been reading along you are probably thinking this guy doesn’t know much about the German language, Why did He start a webpage? And you know what you’d probably be 100% right. But that’s the point – the purpose of this blog is to chronicle my attempt to learn the German language. Over the years I have noticed that I have a lot more drive and determination to run now than I did back in my youth. If I put the effort into running then that I have over the last 20 years I would have been a hell of a lot better runner!!  It’s the same with German.I didn’t put much effort in learning the language back then, but I do want to put a lot in now!! Now there’s the added benefit that learning a new language provides those who may be a little older!! I am not saying the elderly, because I in no way feel elderly, except at the end of the day after babysitting Oliver all day!!

The book that I started my study of German was a book I bought at a library used book sale titled Foundation Course in German. And while the book is almost as old as me (it has a 1958 copyright) it seems to me to be a pretty interesting and comprehensive book. Each lesson starts with a short passage followed by sections on vocabulary, commentary (rules etc) and exercises. When I started several weeks ago I really couldn’t read the first passage very well, but going back to it and re-reading it today I had no problem understanding everything! So I am learning something, yeah me!!

Lets Learn GermanMany of the vocabulary words have become familiar to me from both this book and the Let’s Learn German Picture Dictionary i checked out of the library. The picture dictionary groups items by locations and type of words. The first location is the classroom hence the familiar words in both books! Yes the dictionary is a child’s book but hey, you can consider children newbies to the language, which is also hat i am!! Anyway, I am going to start both a resource page for the site, listing information about the books and other resources I am using in my studies and a vocabulary page. Creation of the vocabulary pages will give me each practice in writing out the words as I learn new ones as well as providing me a place to review the words!!

So first I hope you will join me in this endeavor and secondly I hope maybe it will either give you so inspiration to try to learn the language, because if this older dog can learn it, I am sure you can. too!

Day Two – Another Boring Day – not with Zoe!

Day Two – Work and Babysitting in German……

Today was just another day. The day’s summary in German follows. I have highlighted words I had to look up. I will list them at the end of the post.

At the start of the year, I bought a page a day German calendar. While I have not read the phrases everyday, especially when i was sick back in February, I have been looking at it over the last few weeks.I thought I would try to incorporate these phrases, etc into this website.

Yesterday the phrase was…..

Ist sie noch ledig?

Is she still single?

I have been trying to answer the questions. My answer to this question was

Nein, sie ist nicht ledig. sie ist verheiratet mit zwei Kinder!

No she is  not single. She is married with two children.

The two key words – ledig which means single and verheiratet which is married. I had to look up married!!

Today’s Phrase….

Wie lange sind Sie schon verheiratet?

How long have you (formal) been married?

My answer: Ich habe seit sechsundvierzig Jahre verheiratet!!

Es ist eine lange Zeit seit ich ledig war! – It’s been a long time since I was single!

Sind Sie ledig or verheiratet? Wenn Sie, für wie lange verheiratet sind?

(Are You single or married? If you are married, for how long?) The answer is…..
