Mid – June Reading Challenges Update!

Well we’ve just past the middle of June, so it’s time to check how I’m doing on my Reading Challenges. So far this month I have finished three books. I was only planning on reading one of them this month!

June 2015 Reads
28 Dark Intelligence – Neal Asher Science Fiction Library
27 The Stranger – Harlan Coben Cloak & Dagger Library
26 The Martian – Andy Weir Science Fiction Ebook

The books that I was reading at the end of May and planning to finish in June are listed on the table below. As you can see only Dark Intelligence is the only one that I was reading!!  I found Harlan Coben’s latest The Stranger  at the library when I was picking up a book for my daughter and couldn’t pass it up, I figured correctly that it would be a fast read!. The Martian is an ebook that I had requested from the library a long time ago, that became unexpectedly available!! So after finishing the above books, I have to get back into the other four books that I am still reading and see if I can finish them before the end of the month!! I will be posting my reviews of Dark Intelligence and The Stranger shortly! They were both great reads!

Currently Reading at the End of May Challenge From
Dark Intelligence – Neal Asher Science Fiction Library
Wages of Rebellion –Chris Hedges Nonfiction Library
How to Read the Solar System Nonfiction Library
Who Buries the Dead – C.S. Harris Cloak & Dagger Library
The Matarese CountdownRobert Ludlum Cloak & Dagger TBR Pile

The table below shows where I stand on my reading challenges. Ideally, at the end of this month I would be above 50% on all my challenges and I’m pretty close to that. Right now I am above 50% on two of the challenges and the overall total of books I planned to read! Considering that I am at 29 books at the middle of June and only read 34 all of 2014, I guess I’m not doing too badly!! I am really enjoying the Science Fiction Challenge and will be reading more books in that genre as 2015 continues!! Neal Asher and James C Corey here I come!! Oh my, I just bought Prador Moon the first of the Neal Asher Polity Books!! That does not bode well for completion of maybe one of the books I am currently reading!! Oh well! Too many books, too little time!!

Reading Challenges End of May Update

Six Books Finished for My Reading Challenges

So as we come to the end of May it’s time to check in and see how I’m doing on my various Reading Challenges. May was another great reading month. I finished six books that go towards my Reading Challenges and one that doesn’t. The one that doesn’t fall into any of the Reading Challenges is a free Kindle ebook that I read Payback and a Bottle of Merlot – Bria Marche. Hey it was free and worth every penny of it! Cough! Cough! So here are the books and the Reading Challenges that the book falls into…..

May 2015 Reads
26 Bowl of Heaven – Benford & Niven Science Fiction Library
25 Payback and a Bottle of Merlot None Ebook
24 Watching You Michael Robotham Cloak & Dagger Library
23 Brimstone _Preston & Child Cloak & Dagger TBR Pile
22 Inspector of the Dead – David Morrell Cloak & Dagger Library
21 Dance of Death – Preston & Child Cloak & Dagger TBR Pile
20 What Then Must We Do-Gar Alperowitz Nonfiction Library

So after five months I am at almost 50% of the total books that I plan to read for the year! Go Me!  It seems that I need to read more Nonfiction, Science Fiction books to try to catch up with my Cloak & Dagger reads! And maybe I need to read more from my TBR pile!

Totals 9 16 25 51 49%
2015 TBR Pile Challlenge 9 25 36%

Actually it looks like I’m doing that with the books that I am currently reading! There’s one science fiction book, two nonfiction books and a Historical Fiction book, but only one is from my TBR pile!. So far I am enjoying all the books that I’m reading this month!

I am enjoying the Neal Asher book Dark Intelligence a lot more than Bowl of Heaven and I don’t know how long it’s been since I read a Robert Ludlum book. Like David Morrell, Ludlum was a staple of my reading in the 80s. The Matarese Countdown is a sequel to The Matarese Circle, which I read way back in the 80s and I certainly only have vague memories of it. So far it’s vintage Ludlum and really good!  Who Buries The Dead is book #10 in the Sebastian St. Cyr series and was released in 2015. And even though, the only other book in the series that I’ve read is book 2, I am still enjoying this one. But I certainly want to go back and see what happened prior to this book! I have many questions like how did Sebastian meet Hero his wife and what happened to the love of his life from When Gods Die??

As for the two nonfiction books I plan to read. I am still moving slowly along with How to Read the Solar System and have just begun the Chris Hedges book, I am not sure how much  am going to like it, because it’s not really what I expected!

Anyone have any comments on any of the books I’m reading or have finished?? I’d be glad to hear what you think!!

Reading Challenge Update and Reads May 2015

May Reading Challenge Update

April 2015 was a great reading month for me as I finished seven books!! Woo! Hoo! May has not gotten off to a bad start either I have already finished two books. What Then Must We Do? by Gar Alperovitz and Dance of Death from the dynamic duo of Preston & Child

What Then Must We Do? is treatise on what we need to do in the future to try to fix our broken economic system. It delves into what we can do to democratize the ownership of wealth in our nation to strengthen our communities and our nation!! It is book 4 on a goal of 11 in my nonfiction reading challenge and book number 20 for 2015! Review

Dance of Death from the writing team of Preston & Child is the sixth book in the Pendergrast series and the second to feature Pendergrast’s evil brother Diogenes. After finishing the book I shook my head and thought why has it been on m TBR pile for so long!! The book s number 12 on a goal of 23 in my 2015 Clock & Dagger Reading Challenge and number 8 of 25 in my TBR Pile Challenge!! Review

Proposed May Reading Challenge Books

So that’s where I am currently. The following are the books that I plan to read in May of 2015. The operative word is plan. Four out of the five books are in excess of 400 pages, so I can see the possibility of a couple slipping into my June reads!! Which is what happened already to Larry Niven and Gregory Benford‘s Bowl of Heaven. It’s not that I don’t like it, but the action moves along fairly slowly and other books like Endangered from C.J. Box and Dance of Death hooked me and I couldn’t put them down!! So along with Bowl of Heaven I plan to read….

I read and loved the first two Penn Cage Novels and with two more beyond this one, I think it’s time to catch up on the series.

Now those are the five planned reads, but that can always change when my ADD brain starts to wander. In fact it may already change because the new David Morrell book Inspector of the Dead, which I requested from my library, just came in! Oh My!!

April 2015 Reads and Reading Challenges Update!

Update: April 2015 Reads and Reading Challenges

It’s time to update my reading for the month of April and to look forward to next months reads. To say that as far as reading goes April was a good month is a vast understatement. It was an exceptional reading month, as I finished SEVEN books! That brings my total of 2015 up to  19! Way, way above the average over the last several years!! Now all I have to do is keep it going!!

Here are the books that I read in April 2015 – The big three are The Chessmen, Dreamless and Endangered. While the other were good these three were great!! I haven’t posted my review yet of C J Box’s Endangered but it will be coming soon!!

Here’s where I stand on my various Reading Challenges. Obviously, I am doing pretty damn well with three out of 5 of the challenges above 33% after the first third of the year and the other two not that far behind! Later today I will post my projected reads for May 2015!! I think I have them picked out, but maybe I may tweak the list a little.

Reading Challenge Status Update – April 9, 2015

2015 Reading Challenges Update and Projected April Reads

So we are almost a third of the way through April and I guess it’s time to update my Reading Challenges status and update the list of books I hope to finish this month!!! First yesterday I finished book 15 for 2015 Woo Hoo! To put this minor accomplishment in perspective I finished book 15 in 2014 on August 17th! I actually believe that having a plan and the reading challenges have helped me keep up this great pace!! (and not working full-time help just a wee little bit!)

Book 15 for the year was On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft  by Stephen King. The book was a Christmas gift from my wife along with two other books on writing.  On Writing Well by William Zinsser and The Elements of Style by Strunk and White. Do you think she’s trying to tell me something??? Anyway, the book was good and although it was written or those writing fiction, I did pick up some tips. I will be writing a more detailed review tomorrow. The book counts towards my 2015 Nonfiction Reading Challenge bringing the total in that challenge to 2 on a goal of 11.

Earlier in the week I finished The Chessmen by Peter May, that book goes in the 2015 Cloak and Dagger reading challenge bringing the total in that challenge to 9 on a goal of 23!  .

I am still reading The President’s War and I WILL finish that book this month! Or maybe not. because I have some other really interesting books piled up for April ….. here are my proposed reads…..

What Then Must We Do = 2015 Nonfiction Reading Challenge

I saw this book the other day when I discovered The Next System.com. Both out political and economic systems are not working well so maybe it;s time to start looking for a new system that can create a sustainable future for all.

A while back I wrote I want to increase my happiness level by reading something funny. Well, it was between this on or the Tim Dorsey book on my TBR pile. This one wins!! Maybe Dorsey will win next month!!!

Bowl of Heaven

2015 Science Fiction and Fantasy Reading Challenge

Okay I like hard science fiction and these are two of the best at the sub-genre. When I read the following I knew I had to read this book……

“What would you expect when two of the all-time greatest hard science fiction writers collaborate on a novel? Nothing less than this masterful, mind-expanding book. I am in awe.” – Robert J, Sawyer, author of Triggers

Switching back and forth between this book and the Christopher Moore book – going from the sublime to the ridiculous and  back don’t you think?? Should be fun!! Anyone care to join me??

Reading Challenges – A Quick Update – April 2, 2015

Edward finishes Book 13 of 2015 – brings home 3 new Reading Challenges Books -Oh My!

A quick Reading Challenges Update! This afternoon I finished book number 13 for 2015.When Gods Die -a Sebastian St.Cyr mystery from C.S.Harris. This is the first book that I have read in this series and it will not be my last!! It is actually Book #2 of what is now a 10 book series. The book’s setting is London in June of 1811, where Sebastian St. Cyr, Viscount Devlin is investigating the murder of a beautiful young wife of an aging marquis. The young woman was found dead in the arms of the Prince Regent with a jeweled dagger that once belonged to Bonnie Prince Charlie in her back. And a necklace that belonged to Sebastian’s dead mother around her neck! I will write my complete review tomorrow but for now I’ll just say I really, really liked the book!!

As far as the books I am currently reading and my proposed April reads, let’s recap. I’m am still reading The President’s War, On Writing from Stephen King and Sarah J Maas’s Crown of Midnight.

Now I should be satisfied to just keep reading those three books, but Noooo! I had to go to Barnes & Noble the other night and while there I saw that The Chessmen the third book in Peter May’s terrific Lewis trilogy has been released along with Dreamless, the next installment of the Odd Singsaker series from Norwegian author Jorgen Brekke. I have read the first two books in May’s series The Black House and The Lewis Man and loved them both. I also read Brekke’s first Where Monsters Dwell. and loved it as well! So, after I came home I went to my library’s website and saw that they had both books so I requested them. I also had previously requested the first Jack MacTaggart book Hush Money. I did not think that all THREE of the books were available or that they would come so quickly, but I picked up all three at the library today!!  Now of those three books, I have to read,  The Chessmen,   that series is just too good. So I will set aside the other two books and concentrate on the three books  have been reading and The Chessmen starting either of the other two upon completion of my next book! .

Anyway here is the current status of my reading challenges and the books I am currently reading!! I do believe working on these reading challenges and keeping these charts have helped me focus on my reading, In 2014, I didn’t finish the 13th book until August!! In 2013 I finished book 13 a little earlier in the year, but it was still on May 24th!! So now i just have to keep  going!! So excuse me while I go read!!

March Reading Challenge Update and Current Reads

So I finished book 8 of the year The Things Carried on February 27 and Book 9 Hard Rain by Barry Eisler on March 2nd. Both of those books were from my TBR pile and they bring the total number of books I have read in 2015 from my TBR pile to six. Since The Things They Carried is about the Vietnam War,it is historical fiction and the first book I have read this year that counts toward that challenge! While Hard Rain is a cloak & dagger book and brings the total in that challenge to 5! So here is where I stand now on my various challenges!

Now as for what am I planning to read in March.Well I’m still reading The President’s War about the six presidents who were still alive during the Civil War and what five of them thought of the actions of the sitting President Lincoln’s actions, along with Breaking Creed and Crown of Midnight. However, other night when I was reviewing the new books arriving in March, I came across a new Stanley Hastings mystery Safari from Parnell Hall!! I love the Hastings series so I checked the library and it was available,so I requested it I picked it up on Friday. I have to read it, So I put Green-Eyed Lady on hold.  The good thing though is that Hall’s books are usually fast reads! While I was at the library, I also picked up When Gods Die by C.S. Harris. It is the second book in the Sebastian St.Cyr series. Set in England in 1811, the book goes towards my historical fiction challenge!! Si if you excuse me I have some reading to do!!

February 2015 Reading Update…..

So it’s past the middle of February and time for a reading update. My reading for the year and my Reading Challenges has been going pretty well, I have already finished three of the five books that I have planned to read for Fenruary. The books that I have finished are

Revelation Space – Alastair Reynolds – Science Fiction and TBR Pile challenges

The Promise of a Pencil – Adam Braun – Non-Fiction Challenge

Throne of Glass –  Sarah J Maas – Fantasy – my own Sci-Fi Challenge

All three books are really good so check them out……..Now I had planned on reading two more books Good Omens from Terry Pratchett and Nil Gaimn. and The Templar from P.C. Doherty. I am still reading  Good Omens, but not The Templar, I read the first few pages and it didn’t really like it so I have set it aside. Here’s a reading update with a little about  the five books in my reading rotation:

Hard Rain

 Amazon

Hard Rain from Barry Eisler – Book 2 in the John Rain series. i’ read Rain Fall Book 1 several years ago, but my library didn’t have book 2 so I put off reading th series. Then I found Hard Rain and put it on my TBR shelf. I figure now is the time to read it!!  John Rain is an interesting character an assassin who specializes in death by “natural causes” set in Japan the  first book was really good and since the series is now at eight books, From Goodreads…

Half American, half Japanese, expert in both worlds but at home in neither, John Rain is the best killer money can buy. You tell him who. You tell him where. He doesn’t care about why..

The book is for both my Cloak & Dagger Challenge and the TBR Pile Challenge.

Things They Carried

Amazon

The Things They Carried – Tim O’Brien. From Goodreads

They carried malaria tablets, love letters, 28-pound mine detectors, dope, illustrated bibles, each other. And if they made it home alive, they carried unrelenting images of a nightmarish war that history is only beginning to absorb. Since its first publication, The Things They Carried has become an unparalleled Vietnam testament, a classic work of American literature, and a profound study of men at war that illuminates the capacity, and the limits, of the human heart and soul.. More

The Things They Carried won several awards and was a finalist for both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Critics Award. This book replaces The Templar as a historical fiction read and a is a TBR Pile read!!

Th Presidents' War

Amazon

The Presidents’ War : Six American Presidents and the War that Dvivided Them – Chris DeRose – This book deals five presidents who proceeded the Lincoln presidency. They were divided on the war, as well as, Lincoln’s policies. The five former President’s who were still alive during the War were, John Tyler, Martin Van Buren, James Buchannan, Millard Filimore and  Franklin Pierce. So far I have found this boo to be very interesting since, outside of Lincoln, I never learned much about any of  the other five presidents

Nonfiction Reading Challenge Book

Crown of Midnight

Amazon

Crown of Midnight – Sharon J Maas – Book # 2 of the Throne of Glass series. The time is right to continue with the story of Celaena Sardothien!!

My Science Fiction and Fantasy Challenge

Good Omens

Amazon

Good Omens – Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaimen – I will continue reading this funny book!

Update: What I’m Reading and My Reading Challenges!

Ok so let’s update my January reading and my Reading Challenges. So far I’ve finished two of my projected reads for the month and I’m well into the three other reads!  The books I finished were Strangled and The Monkey’s Raincoat! The three that I am reading are….

Storm FrontStorm Front by Jim Butcher

This book has been on my TBR pile for several years.I first became a fan of Harry Dresden through the TV Show that was on SciFy several years ago. In reading about the show at Wikipedia, I see that it was on the air in 2007 . So sometime between then and now, I picked up the book. Heres a little more about Storm Front Butcher’s first novel.  From Wikipedia

he wrote the first book in The Dresden Files—about a professional wizard, named Harry Dresden, in modern-day Chicago—as an exercise for a writing course in 1996 at the age of 25.

For two years, Butcher floated his manuscript among various publishers before hitting the convention circuit to make contacts in the industry. After meeting Butcher in person, Ricia Mainhardt, the agent who discovered Laurell K. Hamilton, agreed to represent him, which kick-started his writing career.[5] However, Butcher and Mainhardt have since parted ways; Jennifer Jackson is his current agent

Six months after Butcher was signed by Mainhardt, Storm Front, the first novel in The Dresden Files, was picked up by Roc/Penguin Books for publishing. It was released as a paperback in April 2000. Read More

So far I am really enjoying the book!

Don't talk to Strangers

.Don’t Talk to Strangers – Amanda Kyle Williams

Along with Storm Front I am also reading Don’t Talk to Strangers the third installment Amanda Kyle Williams Keye Street series. In this episode, Keye leaves here usual home of Atlanta and takes a job consulting on a case in Whisper, Ga, where the bodies of two young girls  who had disappeared ten years apart have been found. They had been kidnapped and held captive and then brutally, murdered, their bodies were then dumped the same site!!  The case presents a real challenge to Keye’s profiling ability, while the appeal of the Sheriff she’s working with challenges her fidelity to Rauser!!

Revelation SpaceRevelation Space – Alastair Reynolds

Keeping with my resolution to read more Science Fiction, I am working my way through Revelation Space. It has taken me a while to get comfortable with the plot and the various characters. But that is something that is normal for me when I read science fiction or fantasy. For example I read The Hobbit back when I was in college and loved it. But for years I’ve put off reading the Lord of the Rings trilogy because I thought it would be too hard to get back into the books. It’s the same excuse I use for not reading more of  Terry Practchett’s DiscWorld books. I know that it’s a lame excuse and maybe I can get past it this year!!

Anyway Revelation Space is a terrific book and I am enjoying reading it and of course the other two books.

So January has been a good reading month so far and an encouraging start to 2015. Below you well find a little spreadsheet that I mad up so that I can track my progress through the year. Can you say obsessive, I know my wife will say it is. anyway we’ll see how long it lasts…….
