New Audio Connections Lead to New Music Goals!

Connecting All My Audio Equipment Leads to New Music Goals

I mentioned in the last post that I’ve been listening to a lot of music from my music library instead of new music. One of the reasons I’m doing that is I now have my electronic equipment situated so I can play music from just about every media that I have. I now have connected to my receiver the following: an Ion turntable for my vinyl, a five disc CD player, my iPod and a small cassette tape player.

The receiver has three playback ports. The ports are a turntable port, a tape player port and CD/auxiliary port. Initially, I connected the turntable to the turntable port and the sound was too loud and horrible. When I connected it to the CD port it was fine.

Now I had four playback devices and only two ports. The solution was two by a four pack of these RCA plugs.

Now I know It seems like a lot of trouble to go through when I can just listen to almost everything on Spotify. But in my opinion there is just something special about dropping a needle onto a vinyl record. I guess that may be because it sounds better, but I think it’s just because it brings back fond memories.

While CDs don’t bring back as many memories as vinyl records there is still something about holding the jewel case maybe reading the liner notes doing that beats just plain digital recordings.

Now cassettes, I can probably take or leave but there are some albums that I have in cassette that I’m not going to get on CD and may not even be on Spotify. I’m thinking particularly of two early Chris Wall albums.

What These Connections Mean For 2019…..

Ok so now I have the ability to listen to my music library using the media that I first obtained the album on! So what does that mean for me and this blog going forward? One thing that I want to do this year is to listen more often to music  from my music library.

Over the last few years I’ve spent so much time discovering new music that I have lost touch with the music I have loved in the past. Now I’m not saying that I want to live in the past, just that I want to visit more often!

So maybe what I’ll do is bring back Flashback Friday. When I first started to blog  on Fridays I would put on a few old albums listen to them and then write about the artist and album. Yeah, I think that’s something I want to do again!!

Music Goals  for 2019

So here are some music goals for 2019…..

1. Increase the amount I listen to music from my music library. Use music from my music library for the soundtrack of my workouts and yoga. Re-institute Flashback Fridays to listen and write about old favorites!

2. Continue to search out and listen to new music. I will continue to scour the bottom half of various music charts to find new artists!!

3. Make new music the soundtrack for my runs. Typically, the soundtracks of my runs are from the progressive rock, blues or bluegrass genres.

4.Make sure a jazz or new age album is playing in the background while I’m reading. A New Age album will always be the soundtrack of my yoga workouts.

So now I need to go and listen to some music. Hmmm it’s Friday and I see many albums from my vinyl collection. It’s time for Flashback Friday …..what shall I listen to???????

P.S. When I went to take the picture of my audio equipment I realized I forgot to mention that I also have my Sirius/XMRadio connected to the system too! Only I have to unplug something so I will probably just let it play by itself!!

A Bad Cases of the Blogging Blues!

Tr

Can I Get Over My Blogging Blues?

OK so  over the last month or so I have had a hard time making myself write a post. I have started several posts only to get distracted, I then leave the post and find reasons not to finish it. It’s not like I’ve fallen off the “{Better Next Year” wagon.I’m still moving forward and actually doing well! For example, my weight has been fluctuating right around my 2018 goal weight since October. I have been eating well since then also.

I also have been running fairly consistently through the winter and my mile per minute pace has been its  fastest in years. Likewise in my non-running days my workouts are still pretty strong. I have also been doing a nightly yoga routine that as gotten rid of a few minor aches and pains.

Additionally I have read twelve books so far in 2019. So I am, according to Goodreads, on pace to reach my goal of 72 books.

I have also listened to a lot of good music. Just last week my wife and  went to see Tom Paxton and the Don Juans at the Sellersville Theater. The concert tickets were a Christmas present from my wife. But yet like all of the over I haven’t written about it!!

Why can’t I make myself write new posts?

So why??? Why can’t I make myself write new posts!  I think a major reason is I don’t think anyone reads what I write so why waste my time when I could be doing something more constructive.

When I first started blogging the main purpose of the blog was to help keep me sane. It was 2010 and I was going through a rough patch. My mother was in a nursing home and her Parkinson’s medications were keeping her pretty wacked out! In addition, my work life was in turmoil, too!

. In July of 2009 my bosses of 29 years 11 months sold their business. While things didn’t change much initially it didn’t take long for changes to happen. Within two years my work load shrank to the point I was doing baby work just to keep me busy and with four years I was laid off and only working when needed. And by the fall of 2014 I retired early.

Anyway listening to music, reading and writing about what I read and heard helped me get through those years. Now though my life is moving along fairly well and that need to write and to feel that I am accomplishing something is not as strong. Consequently, I’ve been trying to think about  new directions for this blog. As of today I have not come up with anything!

While I haven’t been posting about it, over the last few days I have been listening to less new music and more of the albums that are already on my iPod. The soundtracks for my nightly yoga routine have included albums from: Peter Kater and R. Carlos Nakai, Coyote Oldman and Deuter. Maybe that’s a direction I’ll take more old music less new music.

Maybe more health, wellness and happiness. How about more books less music. More music less books?? What do you think?

Ok so now I’m going to sit back, listen to “All Souls Waltz” form Peter Kater and R Carlos Nakai’s album Honorable Sky, while I wait for all the sage advice from my readers!

Eighteen Below – Stefan Ahnhem – A Cut Above!

Well I didn’t do badly in writing in January,  it over the last week I have been slipping behind. Here’s a short post to try to catch up a little.

Eighteen Below – Stefan Ahnhem (Fabian Risk #3)

Yesterday, I finished my second read for February. It was Eighteen Below by Stefan Ahnhem. It is the third book in the Fabian Risk series. I read books one and two Victim without a Face and The Ninth Grave In 2018. The series has quickly become one of my favorites.

In this install Fabian a member of the Helsingborg crime squad……..

A Pause for some Geography – Where is Helsingborg?

Time out. It, time to learn a little geography’

In the first map I can see Helsingborg in relationship to Denmark. So Helsingborg is at the southern tip of Sweden and is just a bit northwest of Copenhagen. In the second map I see that Helsingor Denmark is just a little southeast of Helsingborg. You’ll see in a minute how that is important.

Back to Eighteen Below

But back to the plot of Eighteen Below. Fabian and his squad mates are chasing a diabolical criminal who has assumed the identity of a Swedish billionaire and liquidated all his wealth. And may be moving on to new victims!

While in the aforementioned Danish city of Helsingor, Dunja Hougaard now a street police officer is in the midst of her own investigation. Dunja is now a street cop because of what happened in a previous book in the series.

Dunja has uncovered  a series of murders which have been committed and filmed by a group of people, filmed and put online.  As the story develops the murders get more heinous, and the story lines start to intertwine. And the nearness of the two cities make that possible.

Eighteen  Below has two great main storylines but it also has a nimber of wonderful subplots. As Fabian and his wife Sonja deal with marital problems. Fabian’s boss deals with her problem with alcohol. While Dunja struggles with her problems with her bosses.

Final Thoughts About Eighteen Below

All in all I think Eighteen Below is a terrific book. It has two great storylines developing at the same time. And it has some twists that kept me guessing. Best of all it has a cast of great characters headed by Fabian and Dunja. Characters who not only have to deal with diabolical murderers, but also the reality of everyday life – a wife, kids and sometimes a boss that’s a real jerk!

So Check Out al three of the Fabian Risk Books by Stefan Ahnhem. As for me the last few pages of Eighteen Below left me wishing I could move right into book four!

Six Great Books Start 2019 with a Bang!!

2. Beyond the Messy Truth – Van Jones

Van Jones discusses the political divide in the United States. In letters to both sides he provides areas of common ground we can all can meet. You can read more about Beyond the Messy Truth at Goodreads

3. The Other Wife – Michael Robotham

Michael Robotham series featuring Joe O’Loughlin is one of my favorites.. In this installment of the series Joe gets a call from a distraught woman who tells him he must come to London. His father has been attacked and is fighting for his life. She claims to be his father’s “other wife” and has been that for the last twenty years! Talk about your life being turned upside down!

Anyway, Joe is left to discover the truth about the attack and “the other wife”. Once again Joe and his friend former Police inspector Vincent Cruz set out to discover what’s going on!!

Been So Long
4. Been So Long – Jorma Kaukonen

Been So Long
is, as the subtitle says, the tale of the Life and Music of Jorma Kaukonen. For those of you who weren’t around for the birth of psychedelic rock, Jorma was the lead guitarist for Jefferson Airplane.

Jorma’s career from those early days in San Francisco. Although, I admit I really didn’t follow the music of Hot Tuna beyond the first two albums That is until Jorma and Jack Casady went back in the studio and recorded Steady As She Goes. At the time of the album’s release it was the first Hot Tuna album in  35 years!

I did though follow Jorma’s solo career that started with his dream bluegrass album Blue Country Heart

I learned a lot about the life of Jorma from Been So Long. Jorma does not tell his story by looking through 60s rose colored glass. He tells it like it is and at times it wasn’t pretty.  Several times while reading the section of the book covering Hot Tuna I went to Spotify and listened and enjoyed albums I never listened to before! Anyway, it’s a great read for any music fan! So Check It Out!

5. Valhalla Rising – Clive Cussler

Ok so looking at my Goodreads I see that the last Dirk Pitt novel I read was Treasure. It’s book 10 in the series. I finished Treasure on June  24, 1990!! Yikes!! That’s five months before my daughter Elizabeth was born.

Anyway, the next book in the series is Sahara which along with several other novels is on my bookshelf. But for some reason Valhalla Rising (#16) caught my eye. I thought I haven’t read a book in this series for a while! Not remembering the true length of time it’s been!

Valhalla Rising is another action packed Dirk Pitt adventure. As Dirk battles a ruthless corporate executive  who will stop at nothing and that includes killing innocent people to get what he wants!

I always enjoy books where I learn something along the way. Valhalla Rising I learned something’s about Norse settlements in the Hudson River Valley as well as the model for Jules Vernes’ Captain Nemo of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea fame. So Check It Out! As for me the next book I the series Trojan Odyssey is on my book shelf????

Noise

6. A Noise Downstairs – Linwood Barclay

Over the last few years, Linwood  Barclay has been one of my favorite authors. His Promise Falls books have solidified him as one of the best. At least in my humble opinion.

Characters often appear in more than one of his standalone books. In A Noise Downstairs the setting of Mitford, Connecticut is a familiar locale.

The story begins when College Professor Paul Davis spots a colleagues car traveling with a broken taillight. Paul follows his friend. When the friend stops, so does Paul. When Paul gets near the car he sees that his friend is holding a shovel and there are two dead women are in the back seat of the car.

By the time Paul realizes what’s happening the shovel is flying towards Paul’s head.

Paul survives, his friend goes to jail. Eight months later Paul is still battling demons and wondering why his friend did what he did. He decides to write about it. His wife is supportive and one day brings home an old typewriter fo him to use. Soon Paul hears the typewriter clicking in the middle of the night! Notes appear a seemingly written by the dead women. What’s going on? Can he discover the truth before he goes mad??

Once again Barclay creates an ordinary man caught in an extraordinary situation. A situation that will take survival skills to the limit!

A.J. Finn writes….

“Linwood Barclay’s novels -as intelligent as Michael Connelly’s, as compelling as Harlan Coben’s – never fail to astonish. A Noise Downstairs, his best work yet, is a cobra of a story. Smooth, slippery , unnerving …. and likely to strike when you least expect it. I devoured this book”

Me, too. You should, too!

The Other Wife – Michael Robotham

The EK’s Life Safari’s 2019 Reading Challenge

The EK’s Life Safari’s 2019 Reading Challenge

So since we are now into month two of 2019, I think it is time to final commit to my 2019 Reading Challenge. I have written earlier that my overall goal is to read 72 books in 2019. That’s seven books over my 2018 Challenge Goal. And  while I thought that goal of 65 books was unreachable I made it.So this ea I thought I’d  added some more!

Though the years I have read mostly mysteries and thrillers. Occasionally I read history and political books. and maybe even a few self-help books. A four years ago when I started creating my Reading Challenges my goal was to expand the genres of the books I read. I created challenges to read more science fiction, more general fiction  as well as a variety of non-fiction books.

Thoughts About Last  Year’s Challenge

Last year I added the challenge of reading more books that line my various bookshelves and are parked on my Kindle. That resulted in me reading books by some of my favorite authors like Bill Pronzini, William G Tapply, and Tony Hillerman.. whose books I haven’t read for years.

Ultimately though last year’s reads were primarily mysteries or thrillers. A total of thirty-eight (38) of the books I read were Mysteries or Thrillers. Of those thirty-eight (38)books , twenty-two (22) were written by mystery authors whose books I currently read. Sixteen (16) books are part of a series I am current on.  Sixteen (16) of the books read were “ new to me” mystery authors.Of those books eight (8) of them are part of a series. Several of those were the first book in a new series!

Within the next few days, I will create a page with  a list of the books I read in 2019.

The 2019 Reading Challenge

Now to construct the 2019 Challenge. Let’s begin b assuming that I probably will read one new book from each of the series mentioned above in 2019. That’s  twenty-four (24) books out of my 72!

That leaves forty-eight (48) books to be divide among the other genres. First, I want to read one science fiction book per month, as well as  one general fiction (no serial killers or plots to blow up the world).

That leaves twenty-four books. I’ll make those nonfiction and divide the nonfiction  books between: history or politics, biographies, science and self-help. Dividing twenty-four by four results six books for each category.

Ok so all of the above sounds pretty good for a start. However, each year I set out to read general literature and/or current fiction and each year I never reach my goal. So this year I’m lowering the goal to 6. And I’ll add the other six book to mystery and thrillers With that change made My 2019 Reading Challenge looks like this…….

2019  Reading Challenge
 Mystery and Thrillers 30
 Science Fiction  12
 General Fiction   6
 Nonfiction
     History/Political  6
      Biographies  6
      Science  6
      Self-Help        6___
Total Books to be Read 72
Maybe Some Mini-Challenges to Change Things Up??

Sometimes in a reading challenge you do things like read a book with blue on the cover. Or read a book whose author’s name starts with A. Maybe what I’ll do mini-challenges some months concerning the six books I will be reading. Maybe, but probably not. Anyway, there you have it my 2019 Reading Challenge. So wish me luck!

In the next post I’ll write about the books I’ve already read in 2019. So far I’m on track. I’ve read six books! Oh, and we’ll see where they fit among my challenges!

Walter Trout’s Survivor Blues Powers Tuesday’s Run

The Run 3.14 Miles

So today was supposed to be colder with a chance of some snow, so yesterday was the better day to run. Since my knee still felt slightly funky I decided that once again , I would run my standard 3.1 mile course. By the time I reached the first mile mark my leg felt pretty good. I was running at a 10:01 min/mile pace and running easily,. As I continued my run, I tried to keep my pace a little slower than my last couple of runs. To do that I kept a close eye on my heart rate and when it rose to around 145 or so I slowed down a little.

As a result, I finished the run at an overall pace of 10:08 min/mile. That’s only 8 seconds per mile slower than Sunday’s run.
However my average heart rate was 4 beats per minute lower yesterday than Sunday (136 bpm to 140 pm). Additionally, on Sunday my heart rate was in my peak range for 29 minutes of the run with 1 minute in the cardio zone. Yesterday the time in the peak zone was down to 23 minutes with 7 minutes in the cardio zone!! Here are the splits…..

The Nerdy Details

Total Miles 3.12 Total Time 31:37 Pace 10:08
Splits: Mile 1 10:08 min/mile   Mile 2 10:18 min/mile  Mile 3 10:13 min/mile   Mile 0.14 9:01 min/ mile

The Soundtrack – Survivor Blues – Walter Trout

The soundtrack for the run was Survivor Blues the latest release from blues artist Walter Trout. In 2014-2015 Trout was suffering from liver disease. A liver transplant saved Trout’s life. As such he is a survivor and I for one are very happy about that. And after listening to Survivor Blues there’s no question Walter is back!!

About Survivor Blues

Survivor Blues isn’t an album of new songs composed by Walter. It is an album of covers, but not songs that ae typically covered They are rather more obscure tracks. In recording the album Trout made

…. it his mission to harness the power and spirit of the originals, while stamping his inimitable musical personality onto each new take. He offers, “My idea was to do these songs like me, to arrange them for my band and style – not to just copy the originals note-for-note.”

…..Opener “Me, My Guitar And The Blues” tips a hat to cult hero Jimmy Dawkins, whose records Trout devoured while cutting his teeth as a ’60s axeslinger in New Jersey. “Nature’s Disappearing” nods to his celebrated ’80s tenure in John Mayall’s near-mythical Bluesbreakers. In-between, you’ll find cherished favourites from a lifetime’s listening, with songs that caught Trout’s ear at key junctures in his journey, from backing up John Lee Hooker in the ’70s, to bringing the groove to Canned Heat in the ’80s or breaking through as a solo artist in the ’90s.

“Nature’s Disappearing” has always been a favorite  of mine. And it was neat to hear Trout’s guitar play the bridge instead of hearing Sugarcane Harris’ violin!

I mentioned Trout being a survivor and that played a big part in picking the title for the album. Trout says…

We started thinking about these enduring songs and the guys playing on the album,” he reflects. “Mike is in recovery. Johnny almost didn’t make it. Skip has had a triple bypass. And I almost didn’t make it after my liver disease in 2014. So Marie said to me, ‘You’re a group of survivors. You’ve all been through hell and you’ve come back. These songs are survivors. This album needs to be called Survivor Blues’.

The Band

Trout’s band on Survivor Blues includes

Johnny Griparic on bass
Teddy Andreadis piano/harmonic
Michael Leasure on drums

The Bottom Line

Survivor Blues is vintage Walter Trout. He has succeeded in making these songs his own!  The album will be in my music rotation for a long time. Additionally, I am still wondering if his Trout ancestors and mine are related! Maybe we even  share some DNA wouldn’t that be awesome!

Here’s “Me, My Guitar and the Blues” the opening track from Survivor Blues

A Weird Day When a Steve Miller Band Song Follows You Home

Origianlly Posted January 2019 Revised and Updated 2026

A Strange Coincidence Leads to Thoughts of the Steve Miller Band

Ok so this isn’t woo woo weird it does to me seems the odds for this happening seem fairly low! This morning I was listening to a Throw Way Back Playlist that I made sometime last year.. The Steve Miller Band’s song “Quicksilver Girl”  from the band’s second album Sailor is in the playlist.

When a Song Follows You Home

Now here where it gets kinda weird. When I came out of the library I turned back on Deep Tracks on Sirius XM Radio. Ai particularly like to listen to Deep Tracks when DJ Earl Bailey is on, his voice of  takes me back to those days of yore on Philadelphia radio station WMMR.Those were the days!

Back When DJs Chose the Music

When the DJ could choose what he or she was going to play!! Of course that got some DJs in trouble when they played songs they weren’t supposed to play. The DJ most famous for that was Steve Leon aka”My Father’s Son” son of Max Leon the owner of WDAS FM. Leon passed away in 2012 and you can read about his exploits here in his obituary.

Ok so now let’s get to the – what are the odds of that happening moment. As I was leaving the library, guess what song came on Deep Tracks. Yeah you guessed it “ Quicksilver Girl”! While it may not be that weird to some I found it amazing that I heard the same 51-year-old song twice within three hours!

Thoughts About the Steve Miller Band

Anyway that got me to thinking about the Steve Miller Band.  I was a big fan through the band’s first seven albums . All seven of them are in vinyl collection. I had the Joker on 8 track tape! Anyway after The Joker became a hit Steve Miller became a radio band for me.

The next Miller album that entered my music library was his 2010 release Bingo! Yes if you do the math that’s 42 years after the release of the band’s first album! Steve followed that really good album with Let Your Hair Down In 2011. That was also a damn fine album.

From My Shelves to This Playlist

Here’s a playlist containing some of my favorite tracks from the Steve Miller albums in my vinyl collection!!

Today’s Run 4 Miles with a Hill! Music Murder Creek by Wicked Grin

The Run – Four Miles with a Hill!

So after two very cold days the temperatures today rose into the high 40s. As such, it became the first running day of the week. Since I do t like to run on back to back days and Friday is a Target work day, it’s looked like today would be the only run until the weekend. I therefore decided I would make it a tougher run than my normal 5K run. I decided the run would be four miles and would include a run up the highest hill in the area.

The run ended up being another amazing run. I ran the first mile in 9:28. And while the hill, on the second mile, was a struggle my overall pace coming down the other side of the bill was still under 10 min/ mile. I held a steady pace over the last two miles and finished the run with a fairly strong kick. My overall pace for the run was 9:56! Go me!! Here are the results.

The Nerdy Details

Total Distance: 4.01 miles. Total Time: 39:51 min Pace: 9:56

The Soundtrack – Murder Creek – Murray Kinsley & Wicked Grin

I had never heard of Murray Kinsley & Wicked Grin until I saw their latest release Murder Creek sitting at number 38 on the Roots Music Report Blues Chart this week. But a brief   the album told me it was going to be an album I would like!

Murder Creek is the fourth release from this Electric blues roots rock band. Where have they been? Oh, they’re from Ottawa Canada! Anyway it appears that they have made an impact on the Canadian blues scene. From the band’s website:

Murray Kinsley & Wicked Grin are an Ottawa based original roots blues/rock band. Gritty vocals and guitar and an “in your face” groove that doesn’t quit!
The band received the 2014 Maple Blues Award for Best New Group. Bassist Leigh-Anne Stanton received the 2015 Maple Blues Award for Bassist of the Year. Their last two discs have both been named “Blues Rock Disc of the Year” by the Blues Underground Network in Western Canada.
They have been touring steadily from 2014 – numerous Canadian and U.S. tours and a recent, very successful tour through England and Germany.

The band performs as a quartet, trio or duo depending on the availability of musicians. The quartet, currently performing in Memphis at The International Blues Challenge,  is composed of. Murray Kinsley on guitar and vocals, Leigh-Anne Stanton on bass, Rod Williams on drums and  rice Stanton harp. And they are damn good! So Check out Murder Creek. As for me I have three other releases to check out!

The First Run with a Hill! Music by Aton Five

So I will be writing about She Rides Shotgun the second book I’ve finished in 2019 shortly, but tonight I think I’ll just write about today’s run.

The Run – 4.25 Miles

Today I decided that I would do a short Cardio-Dance workout, The do some chores and run in the later morning early afternoon. Initially, I was thinking about running 5 to 6 miles. But late morning turned to later in the afternoon than I planned, I decided I would only run a 4.25 course. The course I chose was in I call Harper Loop and it is the only course that goes up the steepest hill in the area. So even though I wasn’t going as far as I planned, The course was more challenging. It became even more challenging I’ve rhte second half of the course when I was running into the wind!! That’s the main reason the last two miles were a struggle. Of course the fact that I ran the first mile too fast didn’t help those last miles either!!! Anyway here are the results….

The Results

Total Miles 4.26. Total Time: 43.21 Pace 10:10 min/mile

Mile Splits. Mile 1 9.32 Mile 2 10:23 Mile 3 10:10 Mile 4 10:38 Mile 0.26 10:04

Avg HR  147. Max HR 156  Calories Burned 573

The Soundtrack

The soundtrack for the run was Solarstalgia from the band Aton Five. The band is a Psychedelic/Space Rock band from Russia. From ProgArchives

ATON FIVE are an instrumental psychedelic quartet, true to the spirit of the 1970’s. In 2015 the band released the first EP called ‘Long Forgotten Tales’, followed by the live in the studio EP ‘Live At Mars’ in 2017. After three years of writing and one more of production their full-fledged debut album ‘Solarstalgia’ saw the light of day in November 2018. The seven songs are similar to the likes of Moonwagon and Hidria Spacefolk More

I had listened to the album last night and I enjoyed it. Even though the album has only seven tracks it lasted for the whole run , partially because two of the tracks are more than 15 minutes long!!

Solarstalgia is the fourth highest rated album on ProgArchives list of 2018’s Best Prog Albums. So I guess others enjoyed it, too! So Check It Out!
